"A Day of Expression"
The Youth Leadership Institute of Erie and students’ of its Student Ambassador Leadership Program (SALT) each year during the month of January celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. birthday by hosting its annual educational event that sheds light on a message of empowerment through creativity, service and nonviolence. The MLK Day of Expression is a two-part project that provides students an opportunity to address ones involvement in community and art and culture. First, through participation in an art contest with the theme of artistically expressing ones interpretation of King’s dream realized. The second part of this project uses the winning art entries to inform the community about how they can become involved in changing the world through an annual event known as Global Youth Service Day around the world. It has become the largest youth-lead community service event that is dedicated to celebrating the contributions that young people make to their communities year-round.
“Everybody can be great... because anybody can serve. You don't have to have a college degree to serve. You don't have to make your subject and verb agree to serve. You only need a heart full of grace. A soul generated by love.” - Martin Luther King, Jr.
